————Lingering————

The last night in Heidelberg was a rainy night. After the revelry, along the quiet street, beside shuttered shops and beneath dim lamps, people lingered, sitting and drinking. The silence was so deep that one could hear raindrops striking cardboard boxes — not loud, just enough to veil my breath. I walked slowly through the drizzle; the ten-minute walk somehow took me an entire night.
